Her passion for creating an Africa empowered through digital innovation is clear, and her insights paint a compelling picture of a continent rich with potential.

Firyal’s vision of technology as a transformative tool resonates deeply with me. However, as we spoke, I shared a concern that has been on my mind: the creative industry in Africa hasn’t pivoted towards technology as profoundly as other regions around the world. While we have incredibly talented creatives across the continent, I believe there’s still a vast, untapped potential for our industry to dive deeper into digital transformation, to harness the true power of technology in amplifying our voices and expanding our reach.

Firyal, however, brought an optimistic perspective to this discussion. She highlighted numerous examples of African creatives who are already embracing technology in innovative ways—from using artificial intelligence to enhance brand strategies to leveraging digital platforms that connect them with global audiences. According to her, African creatives are on a path to not only redefine our continent’s narrative but to position Africa as a leader in digital transformation in the global creative scene.

Through her agency, NUR, Firyal is committed to amplifying African voices. But for her, it’s more than just about representation; it’s about building sustainable ecosystems that uplift our creative industries. She believes we can “reimagine our futures” by promoting digital literacy and creating platforms that support creatives across Africa. Her dedication to helping others embrace technology and grow their brands is a reminder that we, too, have a responsibility to keep pushing boundaries, exploring, and evolving.

Firyal also emphasized the need for unity and collaboration. “Innovation thrives on connection,” she explained, pointing to the power of partnerships among African nations. In her view, it is these connections that can unlock new avenues for growth and drive the kind of meaningful change we all wish to see.

Reflecting on our conversation, I couldn’t agree more. As we navigate this rapidly evolving digital landscape, it’s clear that every effort matters. Whether it’s a small step or a big leap, each initiative that brings technology into our creative spaces contributes to a future where Africa stands as a beacon of innovation, resilience, and hope.

This episode with Firyal reminded me that as Africans, we have the talent, the ideas, and the stories that can transform our industries and economies. We’re on the brink of something extraordinary, and by championing initiatives that empower African youth and promote technological advancement, we can all play a part in shaping a future defined by creativity, unity, and boundless opportunity.

Unveiling the Power of Rebranding and Intentionality: Unlocking New Levels of Opportunity in Your Industry

In today’s dynamic and competitive landscape, the ability to seize new opportunities and become the go-to individual in your industry is paramount.

While talent and skills are crucial, they alone may not suffice in propelling you to the forefront of your field.

Often, it’s the strategic combination of rebranding and intentionality that can truly unlock doors to new possibilities and elevate your professional trajectory.

The Power of Rebranding

Rebranding goes beyond just changing a logo or revamping a website; it’s about reshaping perceptions and positioning yourself in a way that aligns with your goals and aspirations.

Here’s how rebranding can amplify your opportunities:

1. Defining Your Unique Value Proposition (UVP):

Identify what sets you apart from others in your industry. What unique skills, experiences, or perspectives do you bring to the table? Craft a compelling narrative around your UVP to differentiate yourself effectively.

2. Targeting Your Audience:

Understand your target audience—whether it’s potential employers, clients, or collaborators. Tailor your rebranding efforts to resonate with their needs, preferences, and pain points. Position yourself as the solution they’ve been searching for.

3. Updating Your Image:

Refresh your professional image to reflect your newfound identity and goals. This may involve refining your personal brand, updating your resume and portfolio, or enhancing your online presence through platforms like LinkedIn.

The Importance of Intentionality

Intentionality is about purposefully directing your actions and decisions towards achieving specific objectives. It’s the deliberate pursuit of opportunities rather than waiting for them to come knocking.

Here’s how to harness intentionality to widen your professional horizons:

1. Set Clear Goals:

Establish clear, measurable goals that align with your long-term vision. Whether it’s securing a leadership role, expanding your network, or mastering a new skill, having well-defined objectives provides clarity and direction.

2. Cultivate a Growth Mindset:

Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Continuously seek ways to expand your knowledge, develop new skills, and adapt to evolving industry trends. A growth mindset fosters resilience and opens doors to unforeseen opportunities.

3. Network Strategically:

Forge meaningful connections with industry peers, mentors, and thought leaders. Actively participate in professional associations, networking events, and online communities to expand your sphere of influence and uncover hidden opportunities.

Becoming the Go-To Individual

Becoming the go-to individual in your industry requires a combination of rebranding efforts and intentional actions.

Here are some key strategies to position yourself as the go-to expert:

1. Showcase Your Expertise:

Demonstrate your expertise through thought leadership initiatives such as writing articles, speaking at conferences, or hosting webinars. Establish yourself as a trusted authority in your niche by sharing valuable insights and best practices.

2. Deliver Consistent Results:

Consistency breeds credibility. Consistently deliver exceptional results and exceed expectations in every project or assignment you undertake. Your track record of success will speak volumes and solidify your reputation as a reliable go-to professional.

3. Provide Value to Others:

Pay it forward by offering mentorship, guidance, or assistance to others in your industry. By generously sharing your knowledge and expertise, you’ll build goodwill and foster mutually beneficial relationships that can lead to new opportunities down the line.

In conclusion, rebranding and intentionality are powerful catalysts for unlocking new levels of opportunity and becoming the go-to individual in your industry.

By strategically reshaping your personal brand, setting clear goals, and consistently delivering value, you can position yourself for success and pave the way for a fulfilling and rewarding career journey.

Navigating Visibility: Leveraging Your Worth in a Crowded Online World while Upholding Your Values

In today’s digital age, where the online space is saturated with voices clamoring for attention, it can feel daunting to stand out authentically while staying true to your values.

However, it’s not impossible. In fact, by understanding and leveraging your inherent worth, you can carve out a meaningful presence that resonates with others and drives positive change.

1. Know Your Worth:

Before you can leverage your worth, you must first recognize it. Your worth extends beyond metrics like followers or likes; it’s rooted in your unique perspective, experiences, and expertise. Take the time to reflect on what makes you valuable and how you can contribute meaningfully to your online community.

2. Define Your Values and Ethos:

Your values serve as a compass, guiding your actions and decisions both online and offline. Define what matters most to you and integrate these principles into your online presence. Whether it’s authenticity, integrity, or social responsibility, let your values shine through in everything you do.

3. Authenticity is Key:

In a sea of curated content and filtered images, authenticity stands out. Be genuine in your interactions, sharing both your successes and struggles. Embrace vulnerability and allow others to connect with the real you. Authenticity builds trust and fosters genuine relationships, which are essential for growing your visibility online.

4. Find Your Niche:

Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, focus on a specific niche or audience that aligns with your values and interests. By targeting a smaller, more engaged audience, you can create content that resonates deeply and fosters a sense of community. Remember, it’s better to have a dedicated following than a large but disengaged audience.

5. Provide Value:

Whether it’s through informative articles, inspiring stories, or practical tips, strive to provide value with every piece of content you create. Focus on solving problems, answering questions, or providing entertainment that enriches the lives of your audience. When you consistently deliver value, you become a trusted source of information and insight in your niche.

6. Collaborate and Network:

Building relationships with like-minded individuals and brands can amplify your visibility and reach. Look for opportunities to collaborate on projects, guest blog posts, or joint ventures that align with your values and goals. Networking not only expands your audience but also exposes you to new ideas and perspectives.

7. Stay Consistent:

Consistency is key to building a strong online presence. Whether it’s posting regular content, engaging with your audience, or maintaining your values, consistency reinforces your brand identity and keeps you top of mind with your followers. Set a schedule and stick to it, even when it feels challenging.

8. Measure Impact, Not Just Metrics:

While metrics like followers and engagement are important, they don’t tell the whole story. Instead of focusing solely on vanity metrics, measure the impact of your online presence in terms of the connections you’ve made, the conversations you’ve sparked, and the positive change you’ve influenced. Remember, it’s the quality of your influence that matters most.

9. Adapt and Evolve:

The online landscape is constantly evolving, so be prepared to adapt and evolve with it. Stay informed about emerging trends and technologies, and be willing to pivot your strategy when necessary. Embrace experimentation and don’t be afraid to try new things in pursuit of your goals.

10. Stay True to Yourself:

In the pursuit of visibility and influence, it can be tempting to compromise your values or authenticity. However, staying true to yourself is paramount. Never sacrifice your integrity or ethics for the sake of popularity or success. Your authenticity is your greatest asset, and it’s what will ultimately set you apart in a crowded online world.

By leveraging your worth, staying true to your values, and consistently providing value to your audience, you can grow your visibility online while making a meaningful impact on the world around you.

It may not always be easy, but by staying focused on what truly matters, you can create a digital presence that reflects who you are and what you stand for.

Brewing Success: Lessons from Tea and Puff Puff to Jumpstart Your Week

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, it’s easy to overlook the simple wisdom passed down by our elders. “Intentions are the guiding pillar to a successful life,” they used to say. As we embark on the journey towards our goals, it’s essential to take a moment to reflect on these timeless lessons.

So, before you dive headfirst into the challenges of the week, take a pause, grab a cup of tea, and indulge in some puff puff – let this be the fuel that propels you forward and helps you chart the course to your destination.

Tea: A Sip of Serenity

Tea, with its rich history and cultural significance, serves as more than just a beverage. It’s a ritual, a moment to center yourself before the chaos ensues. As you sip on the warm concoction, take a deep breath and let the calming properties of the tea infuse your spirit. Whether it’s a fragrant green tea, a robust black tea, or a soothing herbal blend, each sip is a reminder to set positive intentions for the week ahead.

Puff Puff: The Sweetness of Beginnings

In many cultures, puff puff – those delectable, fried balls of dough – symbolize celebration and the sweetness of new beginnings. As you indulge in the satisfying crunch of a puff puff, consider the joy that comes with starting afresh. Let each bite be a metaphor for the opportunities that lie ahead, and relish in the idea that every beginning is a chance to learn, grow, and succeed.

The Power of Intentions:

Intentions act as the guiding force that shapes our actions and directs our energy towards achieving our goals. Before you plunge into the week’s challenges, take a moment to set clear intentions. What do you hope to accomplish? How do you want to impact others positively? Intentions provide the roadmap for your journey, helping you stay focused and aligned with your aspirations.

Fueling Your Ambitions:

Tea and puff puff, in this context, serve as more than just refreshments. They are the symbolic fuel that powers your ambitions. The warmth of the tea and the sweetness of the puff puff combine to create a sensory experience that ignites creativity and determination. Use this moment to visualize your success, drawing inspiration from the comforting ritual that these simple pleasures provide.

As you embark on the week ahead, armed with the wisdom of tea and puff puff, remember that success is not only about achieving goals but also about savoring the journey. Intentions, like a guiding pillar, will light the way, and with the right fuel, you’re bound to create a map that leads to triumph and fulfillment. So, sip your tea, savor your puff puff, and let this be the beginning of a week filled with purpose, positivity, and success.

Crafting Connections: The Evolution of a Speaker's Journey

Being a speaker, whether as a keynote presenter or a public advocate, is often seen as an innate talent reserved for a select few. However, it’s more than just a gift at birth; it’s a craft honed through experience, passion, and relentless determination.

I’ve traversed my own path in this space, evolving from a perceived troublemaker to a voice resonating on global stages. My journey has taught me invaluable lessons about the power of perseverance, authenticity, and the unique challenges faced, particularly as an African speaker.

Growing up, I never imagined that the little girl labeled as a nuisance would one day stand before diverse audiences, sharing insights and inspiring change. Yet, here I am, fueled by a mission to uplift others, especially those who, like me, hail from underrepresented backgrounds.

In Africa, the opportunities for aspiring speakers are scarce, overshadowed by barriers of access and entrenched networks. Despite these obstacles, I remain steadfast in my belief that where there’s a will, there’s a way.

The pursuit of becoming a compelling speaker begins with introspection and self-awareness. It’s not about imitating others but embracing one’s unique voice and perspective. Understanding your passion, motivations, and speaking style lays the foundation for authentic connection with your audience.

While it may seem daunting, especially in a landscape where certain demographics face greater scrutiny, maintaining a sense of delusion can be liberating. By daring to dream big and defy expectations, we pave our own paths to success.

Investing in continuous learning and self-improvement is crucial on this journey. Mastery of your craft and subject matter expertise lend credibility to your message. Remember, every step forward presents an opportunity to refine your speaking style and amplify your impact.

As you navigate the challenges and uncertainties, hold onto the belief that your voice matters and your story is worth sharing.

So, the road to becoming a great speaker is paved with resilience, authenticity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Don’t be deterred by the barriers or discouraged by the odds.

Embrace your journey, embrace your voice, and let it echo across the stages of the world.

As you embark on this quest, remember these words:

“With every step comes an opportunity, to be the greatest version of your speaking style. Don’t be scared and don’t despair for everyone has a journey they are yet to discover on the quest to be the greatest speaker.”

So, step forward boldly, for your voice has the power to inspire and transform lives.

Ditch Perfect, Embrace Progress: Consistency Wins

In a world where perfection is often idealized, it’s easy to overlook the power of consistency. Consistency, however, is the true secret to success in any endeavor. Whether you’re aiming to achieve personal goals, excel in your career, or maintain healthy relationships, consistency is the cornerstone upon which progress is built.

The Importance of Consistency

Consistency breeds reliability and trust. When you consistently show up and deliver your best effort, you establish yourself as someone dependable and committed. This reliability not only earns you respect from others but also instills confidence within yourself.

Moreover, consistent actions compound over time, leading to significant results. Just as drops of water can eventually carve through solid rock, small, consistent efforts accumulate to produce remarkable outcomes. It’s the daily habits and routines that shape our lives more than occasional bursts of activity.

Consistency also fosters discipline, a crucial trait for success. Discipline is the ability to stay focused on your goals, even when faced with distractions or challenges.

By committing to consistent actions, you train your mind to resist temptation and stay the course, regardless of obstacles.

Cultivating Discipline

Discipline is not an innate trait but a skill that can be cultivated through practice. Here are some strategies to integrate discipline into your life:

  1. Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve and break it down into manageable steps. Clear goals provide direction and motivation, making it easier to stay on track.
  2. Create a Routine: Establish a daily routine that aligns with your goals. Consistency thrives on routine, so identify specific times for tasks and stick to them religiously.
  3. Start Small: Begin with achievable targets and gradually increase the intensity or duration of your efforts. Small wins build momentum and confidence, reinforcing your commitment to consistency.
  4. Stay Accountable: Share your goals with a trusted friend or mentor who can hold you accountable. Knowing that someone is watching can provide an extra incentive to maintain consistency.
  5. Practice Self-Compassion: Accept that setbacks are inevitable and part of the learning process. Instead of berating yourself for mistakes, learn from them and recommit to your goals with renewed determination.
  6. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements along the way. Celebrating milestones, no matter how small, reinforces the positive behaviors that lead to consistency.

Integrating Consistency into Daily Life

Consistency is not about perfection; it’s about progress. Instead of striving for flawless execution, focus on showing up consistently and giving your best effort each day.

Here are some practical ways to integrate consistency into your daily life:

  1. Establish Morning Rituals: Start your day with purpose by incorporating rituals such as meditation, exercise, or journaling. A consistent morning routine sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.
  2. Block Time for Priorities: Schedule dedicated time blocks for your most important tasks and protect them fiercely. Minimize distractions during these periods to maximize productivity and focus.
  3. Practice Daily Habits: Identify key habits that align with your goals and commit to practicing them every day. Whether it’s reading for 30 minutes, exercising, or learning a new skill, consistency is the key to mastery.
  4. Reflect Regularly: Take time to reflect on your progress and course-correct if necessary. Regular reflection allows you to evaluate what’s working, what’s not, and adjust your approach accordingly.
  5. Stay Flexible: While consistency is important, it’s also essential to remain flexible and adapt to changing circumstances. Life is unpredictable, so be willing to adjust your plans while staying true to your long-term objectives.

Therefore, consistency is the bedrock upon which success is built. By cultivating discipline and integrating consistent actions into your daily life, you can achieve remarkable results and unlock your full potential.

Remember, it’s not about being perfect; it’s about showing up consistently and making progress one step at a time.

From Glass Ceilings to Financial Freedom: Empowering Women in Finance for Competitive Advantage

In the finance and investments ecosystem, women often face significant hurdles that impede their progress and hinder their competitive advantage. From a lack of financial knowledge to limited opportunities and unfair investment channels, the playing field remains uneven.

Despite strides in gender equality, these challenges persist, highlighting the crucial need for change within financial institutions.

Let me share a personal experience that illustrates the pervasive nature of these obstacles. At the age of 29, I found myself in a position where I had the opportunity to acquire a mortgage—a milestone that promised financial stability and independence. However, despite fulfilling all the necessary requirements and having the support of influential individuals, my application was inexplicably rejected not once, but twice. This experience shed light on the systemic biases that women face in the financial sector, where even with backing and influence, securing financial opportunities can be an uphill battle.

The incident prompted introspection and led me to question the broader landscape of financial inclusivity for women. It became evident that the key to empowering women lies in intentionally creating financial programs and activities designed to equip them with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate the system effectively.

It is not enough for financial institutions to merely pay lip service to gender diversity; concrete measures must be taken to ensure equitable access to financial opportunities.

Here are five actionable tips for financial and investment institutions to level the playing field and harness the untapped potential of women for a competitive advantage:

  1. Financial Education Initiatives: Develop comprehensive financial education programs tailored specifically to women, covering topics such as budgeting, saving, investing, and understanding financial products. By equipping women with the necessary knowledge and skills, institutions can empower them to make informed financial decisions.
  2. Accessible Financial Products: Design financial products and services that cater to the unique needs and preferences of women. This includes flexible loan options, tailored investment portfolios, and accessible banking solutions that prioritize inclusivity and affordability.
  3. Diverse Outreach Strategies: Expand outreach efforts to reach women from diverse backgrounds and communities. This may involve partnering with women-focused organizations, hosting outreach events, and leveraging digital platforms to ensure broad accessibility.
  4. Transparent and Fair Practices: Uphold transparency and fairness in all financial transactions and interactions. This includes clear communication of terms and conditions, fair assessment of creditworthiness, and zero tolerance for discriminatory practices.
  5. Promotion of Female Leadership: Foster a culture of gender diversity within financial institutions by promoting female leadership and representation at all levels. By providing women with opportunities for advancement and leadership roles, institutions can create a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Therefore, achieving gender equality in finance and investments requires a concerted effort to dismantle existing barriers and create a more inclusive ecosystem.

By prioritising financial education, expanding access to opportunities, and promoting fair practices, institutions can empower women to realise their full potential and drive sustainable economic growth.

Defying the Odds: African Entrepreneurs Confronting Economic Bias

In the entrepreneurship ecosystem, particularly in Africa, the journey to success is often paved with obstacles stemming from economic bias. Economic biases manifest in various forms, from limited access to financial resources to unequal opportunities in the market.

Despite these challenges, African entrepreneurs exhibit resilience and ingenuity, defying the odds to carve out their path to success. Today on Musing and Biases, i delve into the intricate web of economic bias and entrepreneurship, shedding light on the stories of those who have triumphed against all odds.

Understanding Economic Bias: Economic bias encompasses a range of disparities that hinder equitable access to resources and opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs. In Africa, these biases are deeply rooted in historical, social, and systemic factors. From lack of access to capital and financial services to discriminatory practices in business environments, entrepreneurs often find themselves facing uphill battles from the outset.

The Struggles of Access: One of the most glaring forms of economic bias is the limited access to financial resources. Traditional lending institutions may be hesitant to extend credit to budding entrepreneurs, especially those from marginalized communities or with unconventional business models. This lack of access to capital stifles innovation and perpetuates cycles of poverty, leaving many aspiring entrepreneurs unable to realize their dreams.

Moreover, the unequal distribution of resources further exacerbates the challenges faced by African entrepreneurs. Infrastructure deficiencies, such as unreliable electricity and limited internet connectivity, impede business operations and hinder growth opportunities. Additionally, regulatory hurdles and bureaucratic red tape create barriers to entry, particularly for small-scale enterprises.

Overcoming Barriers: Despite these daunting challenges, African entrepreneurs continue to defy expectations and break barriers. Their stories serve as a testament to the resilience, creativity, and determination that characterize the entrepreneurial spirit.

Take, for instance, the story of Jane, a Kenyan entrepreneur who faced numerous obstacles in launching her sustainable fashion brand. Despite limited access to capital, Jane leveraged microfinance loans and crowdfunding platforms to fund her venture. Through perseverance and strategic networking, she successfully navigated the complexities of the fashion industry, carving out a niche for her eco-friendly designs in both local and international markets.

Similarly, Joseph , a Ghanaian tech entrepreneur, encountered numerous setbacks on his journey to establish a digital payment platform. Faced with skepticism from investors and regulatory challenges, Joseph refused to be deterred. He collaborated with local stakeholders, including government agencies and financial institutions, to advocate for policy reforms that would facilitate innovation in the fintech sector. Through his persistence and advocacy efforts, Joseph’s platform has become a game-changer in the digital economy, empowering millions of users across the continent.

Embracing Diversity and Inclusion: The stories of Jane, Joseph, and countless other African entrepreneurs underscore the importance of fostering diversity and inclusion in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. By dismantling systemic barriers and promoting equitable access to resources, we can unlock the full potential of Africa’s entrepreneurial talent pool.

As we celebrate the achievements of these trailblazers, let us also reflect on our own biases and prejudices that may hinder progress. By embracing diversity and fostering an inclusive environment, we can create a more equitable and prosperous future for all.

Therefore, In the face of economic bias, African entrepreneurs embody resilience, determination, and innovation. Their stories serve as a reminder of the transformative power of entrepreneurship in overcoming systemic challenges and driving positive change.

* Saturday Musings - Career Edition *

My career trajectory isn’t conventional for a millennial neither is it common for the Generation X however, it is still a trajectory towards career advancement. Just like any other ambitious young African I had a dream and the bigger part of that dream was to use my education as a gateway to better opportunities, better pay and for the better part of it a better life.

Now for those who were privileged enough like myself this picture looked a lot like; university abroad, job security abroad and summer holiday/leave days back in Africa in my context Kenya. But if there is one thing I have learnt it is that; we have no control of the outcome of where our careers starts, grow or even end.

And so for the most part of it, the plan was going on well! The best private university in South-East Asia, the best PR agency to start my career in and the freedom to travel and see what lies beyond work. But something happened and this dreamer felt a pull towards the mother land with her dream to be the Leading PR Agency and Specialist Network in the region.

So just like any other millennial i went ahead, got back home with dreams filled in my bag and boom landed back in Kenya with the drive to start my own pr networking agency, with the little savings I had from my pocket money but hoping to get it topped up by my lovely parents.

Fast forward everything was in place and in set, ideas flowing in my head others executed, others waiting to flow out BUT just like any millennial, I experienced a new renewed pull!

Off I went to a new city, a new adventure, higher education, greater dreams and hope for a much better future that in my mind would be fulfilling and rewarding. Boom i landed in Berlin, Germany the city I like to refer as the New York of Europe!

There I was 25 years old, ready to take on my masters which for me felt closer to my ultimate second dream, again education for most of us from the Pan African reach is the gateway to career fulfilment and better life.

Fast forward, I was living the ultimate life of the African millennial and to top it all a dreamer like myself. Easy access to public transport, great health care facilities, bureaucratic ways of systems yet systems that work, free and affordable movement to 28 European countries under the Schengen with no issues and are efficient.

In my mind this was it, this was where my career, life and fulfillment were set to build a foundation and take off on a great trajectory.

Then it happened, the time came where I needed to take up part of my research work back to Kenya. Now in my mind I knew I was going to spend 2 months of my time there and come back to Berlin and take off with graduating, a new job, a new apartment, a new life and fulfilment. But as the saying goes, ‘expect the unexpected…’ Fast forward, mother gets sick, life has to change and being an African first born automatically meant you become the mother and the saviour to everyone.

This millennials career dream took a 360 and two weeks in and out of Berlin packed up and back to my hometown to take on my new career trajectory…First born child!

Now I don’t regret being able to be there through it all, if I was given a chance to do it differently other than wishing my late mum back to life, I would do everything the same without even thinking twice. But the picture I am painting is so you can see, you just have no control over where, when or how your career starts. All you have control over is the preparedness for any situation to meet you ready.

The millennial embraced the shift; the first born & the mother figure, the motivator and the beacon of hope while shifts happen right In front of my eyes. This is where you get challenged, I had the choice to breakdown, give up and blame it all on stopping my life or keep moving through while everything happens around me.

Now I always tell people that African millennials are built differently. We are so resilient that sometimes we don’t notice how everything is up in flames because we always keep moving and hoping for the best.

In the midst of it all, I couldn’t let my dream career trajectory fall or even fail! In the midst of it all I stayed on course, was the beacon of hope at home, online and among those I came across. Fast forward months later, I get a job in our local county government in the tourism department as a tourism officer. Through my push, deliberate and intentionality this career step wasn’t envisioned, neither was it projected but it happened.

Exciting as it was, this millennial would now be able to have a bit of her own coins, pay taxes and have health insurance while still hoping for the best and a miracle for the life shift at home. Again that didn’t derail me, three months in an opportunity came up again all fully paid (things we love to hear) came up and found myself in china for 1 month training for additional skill as a tourism officer.

Fast forward after the month, the biggest career shift happened. One that I never manifested, never wished, never hoped nor pushed for. At the age of 29 I occupied one of the most powerful offices in our republic Deputy Minister ( Chief Administrative Secretary ) and the president who I always saw on television, heard on radio or seen on social media became my boss.THE PRESIDENT WAS MY BOSS AT THE AGE OF 29 Ya’ll!

This career shift happened and caught me by surprise. Was I well versed with what it entailed? No. Was I experienced with what was to come? No. Was I anticipating such a career shift? No. Was I qualified? I believe so. Was I prepared? Subconsciously I was. Was I the right fit? Absolutely.

It was then when my career trajectory shot up so high and only then did it make sense why I kept having push and pull energy when it came to coming back home, because the rounds I made were preparing me for what was to come.

A bigger percentage of us have no control of where our career trajectory would stop, where it would shoot up or where it would start. However, we have control of how we prepare ourselves, we have control of what we feel deep within and we have control of how we react towards shifts.

As my musing isn’t finished, at this point I have this to say; ‘Sometimes in the midst of our adventures, our own challenges, our own confusion and our own let downs, it is when we sprout into beautiful discoveries and powerful testaments.’

Remember this : It really isn’t about the success but the lessons that bring you onto the journey on the road less trodden on!’

To Be Continued.

Breaking Bias & Owning Spaces https://nabdalla.com/breaking-bias-owning-spaces/ https://nabdalla.com/breaking-bias-owning-spaces/#respond Tue, 02 Apr 2024 06:35:19 +0000 https://nabdalla.com/?p=543

Breaking Bias & Owning Spaces

I constantly say this to young Africa women; breaking biases doesn’t require you to be a rocket scientist to understand the magnitude of what it means.

For centuries women have been breaking biases one way or another, what lacked is the ability to know that this is a bias one was breaking and two, digital spaces to actually amplify the voices of what biases one was breaking.

I talk about young African women being a walking bias; geographically, culturally, religiously, economically, politically and financially yet we tend to dig deeper and deeper just to look for a bias to break and be proud of it.

See I had the opportunity to conduct a workshop on ‘breaking biases and owning spaces unapologetically’ at the ‘What Women Want Summit’ and before I had my workshop, I had days to just think about how I was going to conduct this workshop and what exactly I would say to all these ladies who were excitingly looking forward to the workshop day.

You  see most times I usually speak off my head because I speak about things I practice on a day-to-day base. But this one was different, I felt like I needed to prepare and why not? This was a summit where I saw my photo together with so many other phenominal ladies’ on a billboard

A girl like me, a young African millennial hmm… I felt like this was different, this needed me to pull out my professional hat and really show up with pointers on how to break those biases and own one’s space unapologetically.

Now two days to the workshop I felt gitterns, imposter syndrome decided to pay me a courtesy call to just see how I was fairing off. See I had two choices;  serve my imposter syndrome tea and sit comfortably by the fire place narrating to her about how unworthy and unqualified I am or the other choice would be covering my imposter syndrome with a warm blanket and have her cool down her cold vibe that would have me frozen as soon as I stood Infront of the women at the workshop.

Fast forward the day had arrived and it was a Sunday! Now let me tell you abit about my Sunday relationship with myself. I usually tell people even if you would have offered me 1 million, as long as it was a Sunday it would have to take a miracle for me to be out of the house or even give a talk. But guess what this Sunday was different for this young lady, I was actually very excited that I was going to run a workshop.

Now remember the complicated situation I was in with my imposter syndrome and I had two choices to pick from? Well, I chose to cover her with a warm blanket and she cooled down. So I went on with my exciting and happy mood, picked one of my favorite outfits that had my favorite color and fit perfectly with the mood which was ‘Ramadan’ and I headed out ready to share my nuggets.

Got there ahead of time, a perfectly good strategy if you want to take it all in and just get yourself well versed with your environment and audience. Walked into the workshop room and boom, ‘I’m back again!’ my imposter syndrome whispered in my ears and went straight into my mind.  Shook it off and walked further into the room and boom, ‘what if no one comes for your session? ’shook it off again and walked a little further down.

Looked around, took a deep breath, cleared my mind and I said to myself, ‘My dear friend, I control you and not vice versa!’ and it was in that moment I was calm, the room felt free and my mind was ready.

The time came and the room kept filling up and in a split second I had a full house, filled with curious minds and hopeful eyes. And it was in that moment that I owned my space unapologetically and breaking the location bias which was, ‘They show up, women show up no matter where or for who, women always show up!’

At the end of it all a session that was set to run for 1 hour ran for 2 hours straight with the women glued to their seats, interacting, participating and breaking their own bias which is, ‘showing up and owning their space.’ Furthermore, I may have run a session on, ‘breaking biases and owning your space’ but in reality, I broke my own doubtful bias, owned the space which had all the women and showed up unapologetically.

Moral of it all; those of us who are seen to be empowering, encouraging and motivating the community it is in reality that the community empowers us each time we step into our power and show up for them all.

So, the next time someone questions what bias you are breaking and what space you are owning, look them straight in the eye and tell them, ‘The mere fact that I am a young African woman, I am a walking bias itself and each step I take I break a bias or two unapologetically.’

Always remember, own that space and don’t really ask permission to do so because in reality spaces are so unfamiliar it takes courage and persistence to mold it into your own as you own it unapologetically.
